Specifically designed for ultra-low power and energy harvesting nodes, the Green Power™ protocol offered by the Connectivity Standards Alliance® is a reduced complexity version of Zigbee® that is fully compliant with the 802.15.4 PHY and MAC layers. A common and popular example is an energy-harvesting light switch. The battery-less switches can be placed or moved anywhere because there are no wires and are entirely maintenance-free. Green Power-enabled devices communicate through a Green Power proxy device, a standard Zigbee 3.0 router that translates the Green Power messages to full Zigbee messages. Therefore, the Green Power nodes interoperate seamlessly with traditional Zigbee nodes.
The NCS36510 SoC from onsemi is one of the lowest power 802.15.4 radios on the market and is especially suited for Green Power nodes. Our reference design provides a complete example of how a battery and maintenance-free switch using harvested energy is feasible and practical. Using a harvester from our technology partner ZF, the reference design is ready to go and can be tested right out of the box. Alongside the Green Power reference design, onsemi also offers a full Zigbee 3.0 stack pre-certified as a Zigbee Compliant Platform™. With both protocol stacks, the NCS36510 can be used for all types of Zigbee nodes to complete a complete Zigbee network.
