Optimizing the LiDAR Signal Chain: Sensors and Integrated Processing Solutions from ON Semiconductor and LeddarTech

Accurate, small-form-factor, low-cost, scalable LiDAR systems targeting long and short-range applications require higher performance detectors and integrated readout and processing solutions.

SiPM and SPAD arrays are fast becoming the sensor of choice for long and short-range LiDAR systems displacing legacy detectors such as APD’s. SiPMs offer high internal gain and excellent uniformity by design. However, as the detector becomes more sensitive, the optical and signal chain requirements also change. A particular pain point for system designers is understanding how to incorporate these new sensors into their APD-based designs.

LiDAR signal chains can be divided into two main camps – leading-edge discrimination using a TDC or full waveform digitization using an ADC. Many of these solutions use discrete components, which take up valuable real estate, increasing the overall size of the LiDAR module. Integrated solutions offer amplification and digitization on a single IC, helping reduce the signal chain size and minimize system cost.

ON Semiconductor and LeddarTech have collaborated to educate the designers within the LiDAR ecosystem on the benefits of high-performance SiPM detectors as well as integrated readout and processing solutions. We will discuss the pros and cons of the different dToF sensors and compare the different readout architectures. We will also present evidence from real-world measurements to confirm the improvements possible using SiPM detectors in LIDAR. As part of our collaboration, we will also offer a reference design based on the RDM-Series SiPM array from ON Semiconductor and the LCA-3 evaluation platform from LeddarTech.

Rainer Stuhlberger received the Dipl.-Ing. Degree (master) in mechatronics, specialization in communications and information engineering, from the University of Linz, Austria, in 2004. Following this, Mr. Stuhlberger joined the Institute of Communications and Information Engineering at the University of Linz, Austria. He started his Ph.D. in the field of system-design and simulation of RF impairments. After finishing his Ph.D., he joined Infineon Technologies, where he was the leading architect in automotive radar applications. In 2018 Mr. Stuhlberger joined LeddarTech as ASIC and System Architect in the field of automotive LIDAR applications. Since 2019 he is leading the platform architecture and signal processing group at LeddarTech. Mr. Stuhlberger holds more than 20 Patents in the field of ADAS applications.
